The PIRN Communication and Democracy working group is concerned with the role and impact of communication in contemporary governance and public policy debate. This working group seeks to undertake research on, and promote public awareness of, the ways in which political communication shapes decision-making and policy. A core guiding principle of our work is that a healthy and vibrant democracy must be founded upon open and transparent communications. The focus of this working group is upon the nature, processes and outcomes of political communication, which includes specific research on:
• The role of strategic communication in contemporary governance
• The impacts of lobbying and public relations techniques on policy debate
• Secrecy in government, access to documents, freedom of information
• Regulation and political communication
Activities
The Communications and Democracy Working group recently convened a roundtable discussion on the regulation of Lobbying in the UK at the international Communication & Conflict conference in Glasgow, September 7 2007.
Arising from this dialogue members of the working group submitted evidence to the Public Administration Select Committee inquiry on Lobbying in September 2007.
This group works closely with academics, journalists and campaigners across the UK, Europe and the US who are interested in promoting open, transparent and accountable democratic communications systems.
The Communication and Democracy working group is convened by William Dinan. To find out more or get involved please contact us.
